HUGE thanks go out to a great crew for a whitewater kayaking mission to the Bighorn River in Alberta earlier this week.
The 3 hour drive from Golden was made more than bearable by the stunning Rockies scenery, and Pat and I nearly managed to resist the opportunity to be complete tourists and stop at every lake or mountain view!
The Bighorn is located on the David Thompson highway near Nordegg. A few km up from the main highway the Crescent Falls area greeted us with some amazing views and kayaking options from the lower falls.
Despite Ben suffering a broken paddle on the first drop, the crew continued to drop every set of falls from Curtain Call at the top of the run and down through the canyon. After the huge Curtain Call, Brandon and Stephane nailed the technical Particle Accelerator (Ben wisely opting out due to his busted paddle), and all three of the guys went on to drop 10 foot Squirrel Nuts, 25 foot Freefall, and then a final 20 foot plunge into the final pool. From that point the guys had a straightforward paddle to the takeout while Pat and I battled our way back to the top of the canyon.
Thanks to Brandon Willms (orange kayak), Ben Hawthorne (red kayak), Stephane Coutu (purple kayak) for some spectacular paddling, and to Pat Garbutt for his technical support.
