A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to spend a week working with the CARDA teams during their annual training week.
For those who are not familiar with CARDA (the Canadian Avalanche Rescue Dog Association) they are a non-profit charitable organization and you can read a lot more about them on their website here: http://www.carda.ca/
Every year CARDA members meet for a week of intensive training and validations. This year they were supported by Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, who kindly donated use of their terrain and lifts for training.
Amongst the many other ‘eye opening’ moments, I was impressed to meet so many of CARDA’s US colleagues who come to Canada every year for training – the training and certification in Canada is regarded as world leading, and to have Kyle, the president of the Association, resident in Golden as well as several of their key validated teams, is testament to the community we live in and the commitment to snow safety and rescue.
Despite constant challenges with light and weather, hopefully we managed to get some shots which portray the great work these teams do, and the intensive training that is required to make them as effective as they need to be.
Above are a handful of shots from the week, showing some of the exercises and good times!
